Earth Tank Loadout

earth_tank_dps

  1. Earthen Grip: Grabs an enemy with a hand of Earth to stun and drag them toward you.
  2. Epicenter: Create a focused seismic event that damages and pulls enemies toward you.
  3. Jackhammer: Pummel the ground below, generating destructive vibrations that damage and knock down nearby enemies. Increases Damage Absorption. Additional Aftershocks increase Damage Absorption duration [Aftershock Unlimited (The first 3 Aftershocks will not cost power)
  4. Gemstone Shield: Summons a ring of gemstones to protect you from a percentage of incoming damage. Creates additional gems increase the percentage of absorbed damage; the final Aftershock will damage enemies. [Aftershock x3] (Usable While Controlled)
  5. Unstoppable: Burst with seismic energy damaging and knocking down nearby enemies and gain immunity against control effects for a short time. Provides immunity to control effects and removes control debuffs to you and up to 7 teammates  (Usable While Controlled)
  6. Soothing Sands: Command the sands of the earth to heal you and gain immunity against control effects for a short time. +10% Control Resistance. Provide immunity to control effects and removes control debuffs for you and up to 7 teammates (Usable While Controlled)

Earth Tank Tips

  • In the Tank role, Dominance is increased by 100%. Defense and Toughness by 1 per point of Dominance plus you gain 25% Damage Absorption.
  • Pull a single enemy with “Earthen Grip[1]” and use it to keep your aggro increasing or “Epicenter [2]” to pull nearby enemies to your center.
  • Always enter a battle with “Jackhammer [3]” to increase Damage absorption and use  Aftershock x3 to increase Damage absorption duration
  • “Gemstone Shield [4]” protects you from a percentage of incoming damage. Use its Aftershock x3  to create additional gems to increase the percentage of absorbed damage
  • Use “Soothing Sands [6] when you are controlled to break it and grant immunity to control effects for you and up to 7 teammates.
  • Use “Unstoppable [5] when you are controlled to break it and grant immunity to control effects for you and up to 7 teammates.

Damage Absorption explained (desolation0 comment)

  • When you are in Earth’s Tank stance, casting any power will provide 25% damage absorption, reducing the damage done by the enemy by that percentage, while also providing bonus Defense based on your Dominance stat. Then you either go the Aftershock route or the Bricks Golem route for another 25%, they don’t stack each other.
    • If you use Brick’s absorption you wont get Aftershock’s absorption from Jackhammer or Upheaval
  • Brick pet reduces your incoming damage another 25% by taking that damage himself, after any mitigation from your own defense and the previous 25% reduction. This does not quite hit 50% total, as the pet instead reduces 25% of the remaining 75%, but the bonus is up permanently as long as Brick is active, and he does some other helpful things.
  • The Aftershock route adds the additional absorption straight to the original 25%, for the full 50%.
    • Casting Upheaval provides 12.5% absorption for 12 seconds, and another 12.5% absorption on the first aftershock,
    • Jackhammer provides 25% absorption for 12 seconds, going up to 18 seconds after the third aftershock.
    • Because these sources don’t stack, and instead cap at the 50% Jackhammer is recommended. In either case, the absorption just cuts that percentage of damage out from being done to you, and the remaining damage is then calculated against your defense.
  • Gemstone Shield mitigates from 50% to 100% incoming damage depending on the number of aftershocks used. That reduction comes before other mitigation sources. The total damage it mitigates is based on your stats. Once the total is used up it breaks, and you go back to taking damage normally.
    • For a big single expected hit, 100% is most useful, for multiple smaller hits, fewer aftershocks may allow the shield to last a slightly longer time up to the full duration, smoothing the damage curve.

im creating a earth amazon warrior i need a loadout that you can recommend i pefer to be a tank. preferable with iconics

Hello Cristopher thanks for your comment. It is hard to be tank with only iconics powers. Plus only Mesmerizing Lasso provides an amazon superpower helpful for tank role, you can use it instead of Earthen Grip

  2. NewEarthTanker

    Hey quick question,

Using soothing sands once before I didn’t really think it was worth it because it brought such a small amount of life back to me. Just speaking from a restoration perspective is it worth it or is it only the additions that make it useful?

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello NewEarthTanker, thanks for your question. Soothing Sands is unlocked for extra 10% Control Resistance and because it Provides immunity to control effects and removes control debuffs for you and up to 7 teammates. If you boost your restoration, Sooting Sands will increased its healing effect. However, it wont be never high compared with a healer superpower. Remember, your main task as a tank is to keep enemies aggro, keeping you alive is healers task

  3. Chanse

I have a question as a recently new player. In this build why put the point into the golem if you dont use it? Is there nothing better to put the point into?

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Chanse, you put the point into the golem because otherwise you wont be able to unlock Soothing Sands because it needs at least 3 power points spent in the tree to be enable.

You can get Envelop or Meteor Shower instead of the golem but you wont be using them neither

Any plans to update this? Seems to be much older than most guides here and im new so unsure if anything has changed

Hello Matthew, Earth hasnt been improved with latest Game Updates which is why some guides havent been updated either. This build and loadout are still viable at the moment 🙂

We always check our guides periodically to provide the best builds and loadouts to the community, if there is any changes we post them on our Fanpage

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Shawn, restoration doesnt improve much earth tanking because of its absorbe damage mechanic. Improving dominance will enhance your survival skills plus keeping you alive is healers task 🙂

  5. NatureBoy

Hi, I just created a Superman character with Earth and decided to be a tank, so can you recommend me a loadout with flight powers, earth powers and some iconic powers and innates combined? Doesn’t need to be good, just for fun. Appreciate it.

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Elite, you can try it out. However, epicenter already does the same effect of Low Pressure so there is no need to have it in the loadout

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Just the 3X, more than that will cost mana and wont have any damage absorption effect added

  6. TheTravisTyler

Ok, thanks for the reply! I would like to try both forms of earth tanking to see what works best for me? Do you think you could give me a quick, good loadout and rotation for Brick tanking? No need to get all technical, just need a loadout and rotation 🙂

      * Keep Brick active all the time so damage received can be transfer to it
      * You may choose between Fortify Golem or Totem
** Use Totem everytime you can to grab nearby enemies aggro and heal Brick
** Use Fortify Golem to restore power over time and shield Brick Golem
      * Use Gemstone Shield with its Aftershock to protect you from a percentage of incoming damage
      * Earthen Grip and Epicenter help you to get aggro from range and nearby enemies

  7. TheTravisTyler

I’m sorry, but why are there no pets? I thought that earth tanking was known for using pets.

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello TheTravis, there are 2 ways of earth tanking. In the community, using Earth Aftershock for tanking is more recommended than Earth Pet. That is why we posted this guide with aftershock. You can check Damage Absorption explained to know more about it. However, earth players can choose between both ways and be great at it 🙂

  8. Kyle

This is a solid aftershock loadout. I’m a long time earth tank, and have always found the aftershocking route preferable over Brick. You have much more control when you aftershock instead of summoning Brick and hoping he doesn’t stupidly kill himself.

I actually have 2 loadouts, 1 for alerts and the other for raids.

    For alerts:
Gemstone Shield, Soothing Sands, Mesmerizing Lasso, Epicenter, Jackhammer, and Reinforce*
*I find Reinforce helpful in alerts since it helps protect the weakest player in the group as well as providing

    For raids:
Gemstone Shield, Unstoppable*, Low Pressure**, Epicenter, Jackhammer, Envelop***
*Unstoppable is especially useful in raids when you’re swamped with a flood of adds
**Low Pressure (assuming you have Flight as your movement mode) is probably the best long distance pull you can get that’s not associated with a powerset. It can pull up to 8 adds to you
***Envelop is more of a personal preference of mine and you can readily swap this out with Soothing Sands, or another power of your choosing. Envelop is a useful last ditch power to use only in case of emergencies. It instantly protects you and for the most part, heals my tank to full health. Useful in raids when you’re being gang banged by adds and your healers are either dead or unable to heal you fast enough. Envelop also knocks down enemies around you when you break out of it which allows you to then use epicenter to grab aggro again

  9. Cbnasty

I just thinks it’s funny that this update was suppose to be for the pets and it doesn’t even make the rotation?!?!

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Cbnasty, earth tanking can be done by two ways: Bricks loadout or Aftershock loadout. This guide recommend Aftershock loadout because most players seems to agree that this is the best way of tanking with earth.

  10. Dogico

This guide has quite a bit of misinformation. Brick tanking only provides 43.75% absorption not 50%, dominance is pretty much useless for Earth tanks to mod with (health is better), aftershocking Gemstone Shield 3x is not always the best option, and in the comments you mentioned that aftershock loadouts allow one to become 100% immune to all damage for a short time. That isn’t true.

The standard aftershock loadout is Gemstone Shield, Soothing Sands, Unstoppable/HL Shield, Epicenter, Jackhammer, Range Pull (Earthen Grip or movement pull). Also for Tactical Mods Quick Healing in chest and Regenerative Shielding in hands can help one squeeze out a bit more survivability.

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Thanks Dogico for your comment we will review this guide for offering a better information. Thanks for sharing your experience and telling us this needs to be fixed

    2. cosmogirly

the loadout you see here is bad very bad
ppl always think a tank must do dmg to thats wrong

i,m a earth tank and my loadout depends on what team i have
for most alerts or raids i use

      earthen grip or stone
      gemstone
      epicenter
      jackhammer
      unstoppable
      reinforce

when i do things solo i use totum
and crystal in the place of unstoppable and reinforce

the thing with golem tanks ar the damg shift your absorption will not be as good as tanks that dont use golems
and btw golems ar usefull as dps when you fight a hard boss you can use brick to get aggro

    3. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Thanks Cosmogirly for your comment, this will help you in our task to improve this guide 🙂

    4. susanvoid

I agree with everything Dogico said except for the modding, Dominance is actually very useful for earth because after using ANY power while in tank role your dominance adds directly to your defense.

For example, an Earth tank with 14k Defense and 4k Dominance will get 18k defense after any use of a power, this can be tested simply by checking your Defense, then hitting a power and immediately checking again.

    5. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Thanks susanvoid, we are currently working on Earth Tank update so we stay tuned for sharing your thoughts 🙂

    6. Bootcamp

You say allot that isn’t true please explain why. For example when i use 3 aftershocks from gemstone shield i can see on active powers 100% damage absorbtion that doen’s mean that i don’t take damage but that i can take 2 time more damage. And why is dominance not inportant for earth a tank blocks alot and dominance is added to my defence .

  11. WindSoar

Hello again I was recently debating on making a earth tank and the aftershock build looks good is there a way to still do okish damage and still be able to tank. And which weapon would be better dual Wield, Staff, Martial arts, dual pistols, or off chance brawling. as all are fast weapon styles accept brawling. This is however my first time attempting a tank role On DCUO i have mostly rolled DPS, any types would be wonderful thank you in advance

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello WindSoar, thanks for your question. DCUO Roles are meant to be great only if you focus on one at the time. There is no way for tanks to deal great damage and viceversa. For tanking, Dual Wield is a great choice same as One Handed (this is my favorite).

Being a tank in DCUO is more about blocking and using your superpowers for aggro, healing, or protection than dealing damage with your weapon. Aftershock Loadout is a really great tanking style that let you be 100% inmune to all damage income for a short time. However, I recommend you to try both tanking styles Loadout then you choose what is the best and funniest 🙂

  12. Damien

How do you think the shield weapon will do with this loadout? I read that the shield is a great weapon for tanks. What is you opinion on it?

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Damien, in my experience you need weapons that are fast and deals damage to multiple enemies at the same time. One handed can be great at it. However, choosing a weapon is about getting use to it so you should choose one and master it 🙂

    2. Ruby Alexandria

I use this build and Shield and can say it is a spectacular weapon for it. The weapon is full of stuns and either the big scoop WM combo or lifting strike will do ya fine. I’m currently CR 104 and have had 0 problem tanking T6 content so far.

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Phoenix Vi, you can replace earth grip with Fortify Golem to Fortify your summoned Golem, shielding it from damage and restoring Power to it over time, it also increases the strenght of Brick’s defensive powers based on your dominance. You can Epicenter to get aggro from enemies but you should be closer to them 🙂

  13. Chris

Hey, With the aftershock loadout instead of reinforce using upheavel to have the damage absorption going would that make a difference or is reinforce helpful with the loadout

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Of course Chris, you can use Upheaval instead of Reinforce to have aditional power that gives you damage absorption. Reinforce is helpful too when you need to protect the group member with the lowest health percentage by transferring a portion of their incoming damage to you

  14. Thi1s_6uy_Alex

Hey great loadout you have right here. Can you get unstoppable and keep soothing sands in the load out just in case you used your breakout power and trinket? Also is anyone having a glitch in pvp where I use gemstone shield and all I see is one rock spinning around me after I aftershock 3 times I don’t know if its a glitch or not just wanting to know.

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello th1s_6uy_Alex, thanks for your comment. You can unlock Unstoppable instead of Wisdom of Solomon and Intimidating Gaze. However, you will need to sacrifice 1 super power in your loadout, because as it is: Earthen Grip (pull aggro), Epicenter (pull aggro), Gemstone Shield (provide additional damage absorption), Totem and Brick Golem (esential for pet earth tanking). So unless you want to sacrifice a pull aggro you cant have Soothing Sands and Unstoppable in the same loadout

  15. Porcupine

I have a question about damage mitigation. I don’t use the pet load out but instead use: Earthen Grip, Epicenter, Jackhammer, Gemstone, Soothing sands, and Reinforce. If I cast epicenter or reinforce do I get 25% damage absorption? Thanks

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Using any of your super powers (Earthern Grip, Epicenter, Reinforce, Soothing sand, Jackhammer, Gemstone) will increase Defense and Toughness by 1 per point of Dominance plus you gain 25% Damage Absorption [this is the default damage absorption that all earth tanks have.].

On the other hand, Gemstone will increase an additional 25% damage absorption with 3x Aftershocks. Without Brick, Jackhammer or Upheaval will give you 50% on the initial cast.

  16. Samos

Does using epicenter give you 25% damage mitigation? Also if I don’t use the pet load out(I use jackhammer, reinforce, soothing sands, earthen grip, gemstone, and epicenter) which powers give me damage mitigation? And does after shocking jackhammer give 50% damage mitigation for 8 or 18 seconds? I heard it go both ways. Thanks

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Samos, using epicenter will give you 25% damage absorption because by using any superpower as a earth tank increase your damage absorption by 25%. Jackhammer and Gemstone Shield are the only one in your loadout which gives you additional damage absorption. This loadout is also great but you will need to continuously using jackhammer to keep your damage mitigation up.

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello TheAtomic, earth tanks can selfheal with Soothing Sands but you can also unlock Hard-Light Shield and If you have Home Turf DLC, you can equip Quick Healing Chest MOD which grants you “Gain an additional 10% bonus to healing Received” and Regenerative Shielding Hand MOD which “heals yourself when using Hard-Light Shield“. both can be obtained from Base Dispenser

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Anthony, you should use any cola that increase your Dominance when you are tanking for example Bulldozer Soder

  18. Ogro

Ive always been DPS but am interested in being tank. when should I accumulating the stats for a tank? straight from the start or just concentrate on precision and wait until level 30?

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Tanks are in demand but only in high CR like 95 and above. At the moment, players with 100 combat rating and more go to low instance to complete feats or even help other players so having a tank is not really necesary if you have some 100+ combat rating players in your group

    2. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Ogro, i recommend you to stay DPS until you reach high Combat rating. Leveling as a Tank will give you great resistance but you will take longer to kill your enemies.

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

There are 2 ways to tank, Damage Absorption based and Pet based. Earth Tanks get 25% damage absorption just for being in tank role.

Pet based is about Using Brick Golem adds an additional 25% damage absorption so in total you will have 50% and using Gemstone Shield with Aftershock x3 will grant you 50% additional damage absorption.

Damage absorption based is about using Jackhammer, Gemstone Shield, and Upheaval to grant you full 100% damage Absorption, this is tanking method consumes a lot of power and needs you to be activating your superpowers more frequently

Hope this answer your question 🙂

    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Theyellow Flash, Damage absorption is the way Earth can be tanks. Earth tanks via Damage Absorption. Using your powers let you absorb damage after the Defense damage reduction (71 defense = 1% Damage Reduction). Using your super-powers will grant you 25% Damage Absorption and having Brick (automatically activate Damage Shift) by your side will grant you additional 25% Damage Absorption, so in total you will have 50% Damage Absorption. Using Gemstone Shield will increase the percentage of absorbed damage also. I hope this answer your question 🙂

    2. desolation0

When you are in Earth’s Tank stance, casting any power will provide 25% damage absorption, reducing the damage done by the enemy by that percentage, while also providing bonus Defense based on your Dominance stat. Then you either go the aftershock route or the pet route for another 25%, they don’t stack. Brick’s absorption takes priority, in that case.

Brick pet reduces your incoming damage another 25% by taking that damage himself, after any mitigation from your own defense and the previous 25% reduction. This does not quite hit 50% total, as the pet instead reduces 25% of the remaining 75%, but the bonus is up permanently as long as Brick is active, and he does some other helpful things.

The Aftershock route adds the additional absorption straight to the original 25%, for the full 50%. Casting Upheaval provides 12.5% absorption for 12 seconds, and another 12.5% on the first aftershock, or Jackhammer provides 25% for 12 seconds, going up to 18 seconds after the third aftershock. Again these sources don’t stack, and instead cap at the 50%. In either case, the absorption just cuts that percentage of damage out from being done to you, and the remaining damage is then calculated against your defense.

Gemstone Shield mitigates from 50% to 100% incoming damage depending on the number of aftershocks used. That reduction comes before other mitigation sources. The total damage it mitigates is based on your stats. Once the total is used up it breaks, and you go back to taking damage normally. For a big single expected hit, 100% is most useful, for multiple smaller hits, fewer aftershocks may allow the shield to last a slightly longer time up to the full duration, smoothing the damage curve.

I am a brand new tank can u plz help me keep aggro I got the same moves but only 33 cr with 30 sp

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Lenny, they only way to keep aggro with your tank is to boost your Dominance with skill points and using Earthen Grip + Epicenter. Personally, i recommend you to raise your CR in DPS role because you will need to kill enemies fast in CHALLENGE, DUOS more than ALERTS and RAIDS.

    2. desolation0

Just the act of casting skills while in tank stance gives you a baseline taunt against any nearby foes. This base taunt should hold aggro over any damage role player, in normal circumstances. Earthen Grip, Stone, and Epicenter are useful as tools to manage positioning, picking up new recently spawned mobs, or to split aggro onto multiple tanks.

  20. GingaAlchemist

What was you’re reason for not taking fortify golem? I thought it was essential to the new earth tank style, especially if you use the brick golem.

    Reply
    1. DCUO Bloguide Post author

Hello Ginga, you can still use Fortify Golem in your loadout. However, i prefer Gemstone Shield to protect me from a percentage of incoming damage which combine it with Brick you can have more than 50% power absorption.

  21. Foolia

How long does damage shift last? There isn’t any info about it in the weapon tree.

Also, do you have guide for legend PVP? Thanks.

We havent done any legends pvp guides. However, i recommend you to use Atrocitus or Bizarro

    2. Sbroscious

Damage shift stays active from the instant you cast until either your golem dies or you see as loading screen

    1. dcuobloguide Post author

As Earth Tank, you need to transfer damage to your pet and also keep healing it. Thats why no bestow powers were selected. This loadout is focus on grab agro, play with your pet side by side.

  23. Superpanda91

I’m new to earth so your guide is a very helpful foundation. I would like to know which powers I should try clipping. I don’t want to stress out my healers because of long cast animations. Any advice?

      Hi Superpanda91

Gemstone Shield and Damage Shift can be clipped after long animation powers. You can clip Epicenter ->Gemstone Shield -> Tap Melee -> Tap Melee -> Tap Melee to get agro and protect yourself against enemies. Also you can clip Totem -> Damage Shift to heals and transfer your incoming damage to nearby golem.
